The Centre for Innovative Ultrasound Solutions (CIUS) for health care, maritime, and oil & gas applications seeks outstanding and creative PhD Candidates and Postdoctoral Fellows. There is available up to 6 positions; 5 PhD Candidates and 1 Postdoctoral Fellow. All the positions are 100 % for a period of 3-year.
CIUS is a Centre for Research-based Innovation (SFI) (www.ntnu.edu/cius), appointed by the Norwegian Research Council where industry, healthcare providers, independent research organizations and academia will collaborate to develop next generations’ ultrasound solutions. Industrial partners include GE Vingmed Ultrasound, Kongsberg Maritime, Statoil, Archer – BTC (Bergen Technology Centre), Medistim, Aurotech Ultrasound, Phoenix Solutions, X-FAB, Sensorlink, Halfwave, and InPhase Solutions. Research partners include SINTEF, St. Olavs University Hospital, Central Norway Regional Health Authority (HMN – [Helse Midt-Norge]), the Nord-Trøndelag Hospital Trust (including Levanger Hospital), and Levanger and Verdal municipalities.

Job description
The available research positions are related to electronics, acoustics and image formation, signal and image processing, and image analysis / visualization. The successful candidates will work in an interdisciplinary team of people from different engineering fields, and in close collaboration with clinical and industry partners.
Research projects are available in both medical and industrial applications of ultrasound imaging. Examples of research projects include ultrasound logging of well and gas pipe integrity, development of next-generation front-end ultrasound imaging electronics, ultrasound Doppler (flow) measurements in noisy environments (industrial and medical application), ultrasound vector-flow imaging for diagnosis of cardiac disease (medical application), machine learning and image analysis (industrial and medical application). The candidate will be expected to work with computer simulations, experimental laboratory setups, as well as field testing / clinical trials.
Qualifications
We are looking for people with relevant education fitting the job description, for instance in electronics (analog CMOS design), acoustics, cybernetics, signal processing, (bio)physics and mathematics, and computer science, or similar.
In order to apply for a PhD Candidate position, the applicant has to hold a master’s degree or equivalent education, with an academic record with a weighted average grade of B or higher, in accordance with NTNU’s grading system. Candidates that are finishing their degree in 2016 are also welcome to apply. .
In order to start a Postdoctoral Fellow position, a PhD degree according to Norwegian and international standards is required. But we also encourage candidates who are finishing their PhD degree in the near future (2016/2017) to apply as starting dates can be flexible.
The candidates are expected to have good knowledge and experience in computer programming (e.g. Matlab, Python, C++). Candidates with prior knowledge and experience in ultrasound technology will be preferred. For the Postdoctoral Fellow position, documented skills and knowledge in ultrasound technology is a prerequisite.
All positions require spoken and written fluency in the English language. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test.
There will be a strong emphasis on the academic quality of the applicant. The successful candidates are expected to work independently, but need excellent interpersonal skills to work successfully in interdisciplinary research teams.

The appointment of the PhD Candidate and Postdoctoral Fellow will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Depending on qualifications and academic background, PhD Candidates at the Faculty of Medicine will be remunerated at wage code 1017 - levels 50-58 on the Norwegian State salary scale, with gross salary from NOK 430 200 - NOK 492 000 a year.
Depending on qualifications and academic background, Postdoctoral Fellows at the Faculty of Medicine will be remunerated at wage code 1352 - levels 57 to 60 on the Norwegian State salary scale, with gross salary from NOK 483 400,- to NOK 509 800 ,- a year.
For both wage codes 2% of the salary is deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. A yearly amount for operating costs will be added.
Candidates may need to pass Norwegian Security Clarence for some projects.
